Dir. Alejandro Jodorowsky
2016 | Chile | Biography/Drama/Fantasy | 128 mins | DCP | In Spanish with English subtitles | R21 (Sexual Scenes and Nudity)
Official Selection - Director's Fortnight (Cannes Film Festival)
'Endless Poetry' is the second film of director Alejandro Jodorowskyʼs planned series of five autobiographical works, following the events in 'The Dance of Reality'. This sequel follows the Jodorowsky family as they leave their lives in provincial Tocopilla for Santiago.
A now-older Alejandro (played largely by his younger son Adan Jodorowsky) discovers his passion for poetry, defying his fatherʼs (older son Brontis Jodorowsky) wishes for him to pursue medicine. Realising his deep-seated unhappiness with his family, Alejandro breaks free from the confines of his family life and immerses himself in the Chilean art scene.
The film recounts the early beginnings of Jodorowskyʼs artistry, as well as hisfriendship with Enrique Lihn, as well as his early encounters with Stella Diaz Varín and Nicanor Parra – all of whom would later become literary giants of Latin American literature.
Widely considered to be Jodorowskyʼs most accessible film to date, 'Endless Poetry' is a biopic of the directorʼs most shaping years, uncovering the early inspirations and fears that inspired the filmmakerʼs art. It showcases yet again Jodorowskyʼs mastery in blending the metaphysical and surreal to tell an evocative tale of a young artistʼs rebellious bravery in pursuing his wildest dreams. It was also shot by the legendary cinematographer Christopher Doyle.
'Endless Poetry' is part of the Jodorowsky Double-Bill, one of the highlights of the festival this year.
